The Vodafone Webbox is the first system of its kind, bringing a new way of viewing and accessing the internet based on a reliable existing cell phone platform. Setup is plug and play, using an existing TV. The keyboard and UI are very visual and intuitive, with an onscreen guide at startup. By that it brings internet connectivity to families in emerging markets like rural India and South Africa, who otherwise have to use costly and often distant internet cafés.
User-tested in Africa, it can be used by everyone from children to grandparents, in schools and at home. It comes with all local languages.
The Webbox comes with a year’s data use included, which makes it very affordable compared to internet cafés. Adding more data is as simple as topping up a PAYG mobile. Internet for everybody - for less than half the price of a netbook PC.
The low-barrier handling of the device also convinced the consumer jury of the Universal Design Award 2011 to give a Consumer Favorite prize to the Webbox.
