Technology and Research

Interview with Thorsten Frackenpohl

What exactly do you understand by this area?

We believe that technological developments and scientific approaches will be at the stage of planning future product solutions important sources of incentives for designers and today to a certain extent already are. Therefore, we decided to subsume our activities in this field under the title of Technology & Research. This includes projects in which our partners need help to release a new technology into a marketable product, but also those projects in which we actively approach partners of the research and / or technology area.

Can you give an example?

A typical project in this area is our cooperation in the development and design of a humanoid robot. As part of the European research project ALEAR six European research institutions worked at exploring the history of the emergence of our language with the help of artificial language. Very helpful in this context were robots that interact with each other, move and recognize each other by the implementation of actions. And at this point we could contribute our expertise to transfer the machine into a – in this case, humanoid – form.

Together with engineers and computer scientists of the Laboratory for Neuro Robotics at the Humboldt University in Berlin, which are responsible for the basic technology of the robot, we could work on the realization of the first designed robot in Europe.

What role can design play in this area?

At this point design can take the role of a mediator; a linkage between the sciences and society. Therefore, designers use a product language that is able to translate the results of research into understandable and acceptable products, so that research can be made available for a wide range of recipients.

Why do you get involved here?

Whoever has a lot on his plate wants to work with known proportions and is often skeptical about using new technology, due to the potential for error. But this is different for research projects and clients with a high research and development standard. Real innovation is possible, we improve ourselves, have a lot of fun and even the opportunity to make abstract research understandable. Actually as a designer one can only gain.

Where exactly do you get into contact with that issue?

First of all we try to work very open-mindedly and to absorb news with respect to new materials, processing procedures or the like.

Furthermore, we constantly encounter new developments via our partners in the technological field, but there are also always points of contact in their general work on future scenarios. At this point our involvement in the conception and implementation of a design competition between European universities should be mentioned.
